When I’m not obsessing over what I’m going to wear, I’m either complaining about school or shoving my face full of food. I know you’re all aware of my interest in fashion and no one wants to hear me complain about school. Therefore, I have decided to talk about my other interest. Food. Lots and lots of food.
When I wake up in the morning, the first thought that pops into my head usually involves what I’m going to eat. Typically, getting up is much easier when I have something good for breakfast. That also works if I have something new to wear. Long story short, I live for clothes and food.
The only problem with my eating addiction is that I always stick to the most boring of foods. Toast, eggs, tuna, feta cheese, apples, grapes, oatmeal, coconuts and that’s about all that’s in my fridge. Luckily when I go out to restaurants, I get a little more daring. But only a little. I usually end up ordering pasta, pizza or salad. Sometimes, I’ll order red meat if I have started feeling a little iron deficient, but only if I have to.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is that although I love to eat, I’m also a very boring about my choice of foods. Therefore, when my friend pointed out a post by Taste Of Thailand Food Tours on Facebook, I was instantly intrigued. The thought of going on a educational tour, where not only do I get to eat the entire time, but eating a lot is entirely encouraged sounded awesome. I have never been on a food tour before, but this seemed like the perfect place to try something new and expand upon my limited knowledge of foods.
Before I knew it, I was scheduled to attend a trip called “Bites and Sites in the Village of Love“. On this tour, I would spend four hours walking and eating Thai food in the Bang Rak area of Bangkok. I was a little bit worried about how well eating would go over with hours of walking. But in the end, I survived. It turned out we got to sit down a lot.
On the day of the tour I showed up late. So typical. Apparently I’m always going to be that irresponsible child. Anyways, I managed to catch up with my tour group just in time for breakfast. After breakfast we ate a snack, another snack, yet another snack, then a few more and then we stopped for lunch. That was just the beginning. The tour continued and I tried something at 15 different places. Yes, I was in food heaven.
Aside from the fact that we got to eat a lot of food, I also learned a lot about Thai food and some of the steps involved with cooking it. I had never before seen the process that goes along with making curry powder, nor had I ever really paid attention to the steps that are needed to make Thai Iced Coffee. Also, did you know there is such thing as DEEP FRIED SOMTAM? Yes, I know. It’s everything.
Although I could share with you all the ways my food knowledge expanded immensely during those four hours, I think I should leave the details for you to learn on your own. The tour is great and there’s nothing worse than a mean spoiler. However, I would like to point out that if they mention the next stop being an all you can eat scorpion grill, they’re lying, you can relax.
Aside from the food specific education I received, this tour also changed my outlook about eating. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t looking at food as a way to shove my face and induce myself into one of those happy feeling “food comas”. Although that did happen, I was also beginning to look at food as something special, that should really be savored and acknowledged as you eat it. I know you probably had this revelation at the age of 12, but I’m still getting there. In my defense, Jacob Holder from Taste of Thailand expressed to me that he wasn’t always so appreciate of food either. Turns out, it took him some time in Italy to realize the fine quality that food can have.
For me, I think that this tour with Taste of Thailand will be the beginning of a new relationship I have with food. Specifically, with Thai food. This tour taught me that I need to learn to appreciate what I eat and to be a little more adventurous in my choices. After all, food is beautiful. I don’t always need to shove a million huge forkfuls in my mouth.
